Rosh Hashanah - Mia talks to the class
Mia talked to the children about the holiday Rosh Hashanah. This is the Jewish New Year. We read that some people celebrate Rosh Hashanah by eating apples and honey for a sweet new year.
Spelling aids
The children use two different spelling tools to aid them with spelling. One is the spelling dictionary. It has a list of high frequency words, but no definitions, so that the children can easily find the word they are looking for. The other tool they use is a personal spelling book. It is a spiral book and the children write a letter of the alphabet on each page. When they need help spelling a word, the children turn to the letter at the beginning of the word, and the teacher writes the word for the student.
First piece of typing on Google Docs
For their first piece of writing on Google Docs, the children put in their email address (login purposes only and email is disabled for first grade students), their password and then open Google Docs. Each child wrote about their birthday for their first piece of writing.
Beautiful Handwriting!
The teacher demonstrates a letter of the alphabet every day. The children learn how to correctly form each letter and the correct placement of the letter on the lines.
The Very Lonely Firefly by Eric Carle

Circle Time/Jobs on the Job Chart
During Circle Time, the children do the calendar and have other jobs that are listed on the job chart. Mille lost a tooth (above) and you can see her name is on the lost tooth chart for August.
Amanda does the weather graph (above) and Kyah is making money for the number of days in school (below).
We track the date, and the days of the week.
We do odd and even according to the date in the month. The five cubes below are for the 5th September and Kaelin is showing us that 5 is an odd number.
Abigail is counting the days in school too and showing us using place value straws.
Amanda is in charge of the recycling and Jocelyn is helping her.
