Graphs, graphs, graphs!

As a class, we graphed our favorite colors on the white board.  The teacher modeled how to complete a graph on paper and each of the children independently made their own graph.  They had to remember their name, the title, to write the color words and to add the correct number of squares for each color.  They did a beautiful job!

Journal Writing

On Monday, the children were introduced to journal writing.  The children put the date at the top of the page, write a sentence (or more) if they can and then illustrate.  The children can write about whatever they want to in the journal.  The children were told that journal writing will become part of their routine every morning.

Abigail's Summer Reading Log

Abigail brought her summer reading log to the classroom.  She shared with the class all of the chapter books she read.  Abigail read over 100 chapter books this summer.  Wow!!!

Science Class

The children had their first science class on Friday, August 26th.  They had a wonderful time in their science classroom in the Science and Technology building.

Math properties

We have been discussing how each of these three types of math manipulatives are the same and different.  We have looked at ways of describing the contents of each container using mathematical language.

Little Cloud by Eric Carle

After reading the story Little Cloud by Eric Carle, the children used one finger to fingerpaint an extra page that could be added to the book.  Scroll down to see what the children decided to paint.

The children are writing their own version of The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle.

Back to School cake!

Kyah's mom very kindly sent a cake to school to celebrate the beginning of the school year.  The children all thought it was delicious!

The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn

We read The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn.  This books tells the story of a young raccoon called Chester who is nervous about the first day of school.  His mom kisses his hand to make him feel better.  The children made Kissing Hands for their family members who might miss them now they are back in school.  Making handprints in paint is a lot of fun!

Settling in on the first morning

As the children started to arrive at school, they were allowed to have some free time to catch up with their old friends and to make friends with our new students.

Orientation Day - August 23, 2013

It was wonderful to meet these three students who are new to Cape Henry this year - Carlson, Charlie and Kaelin.  We had a wonderful morning together.  We toured some of the classrooms in the Lower School, built with Legos, used the new Chromebooks, made pictures and later, Amanda popped in to say hello while her little sister was doing her orientation in the Prekindergarten classroom!
