Middle Schoolers in First Grade

Mrs. Amanda Hayes, head of the Middle School, organized for some of the middle school students to come to first grade. They spent about fifteen minutes listening to my students read one on one.  After that, I had my students read the five page Irish Legends they have been writing over the last few days.  The middle school students then worked one on one again with my students to check that they had correct punctuation, capitalization, and spelling, and they also helped the children improve their vocabulary and add more details to their stories.  It was a great experience for all involved.

Antarctica

We have been learning about Antarctica.  It is the coldest place on Earth.  The children learned that polar bears live in the Arctic and penguins live in Antarctica.  The Arctic is in the northern hemisphere and Antarctica is in the southern hemisphere.  Antarctica is 600 miles from the southern tip of South America.  It is the fifth largest continent.

St. Patrick's Day Snack and Mystery Reader

Mr. Hoye came to read to the children as we celebrated St. Patrick's Day.  He read Jamie O'Rourke and the Big Potato.  While he was reading, the children ate delicious cheesecake with green swirls and drank lemonade that Mrs. Baker sent in for our celebration.  Thanks to Mr. Hoye and Mrs. Baker for reading to us and baking for us!

Limericks

The children have been listening to limericks.  The children learned that a limerick is a five line poem that is funny.  Lines one, two and five rhyme with each other and lines three and four also rhyme with each other.  We learned, wrote and illustrated an Irish themed limerick.  Limerick is also the name of a place in Ireland. We also learned another limerick:

There was a man called Jim,
Who wanted to go for a swim,
He jumped in the pool,
And felt such a fool,
Because there was no water in!

Alonzo's Show and Tell - Exothermic Reaction

Alonzo's mom came in with Alonzo's show and tell.  She explained an exothermic reaction to the children and showed an experiment she and Alonzo had done together using an egg!  Video to be posted below soon!

Shamrock math - estimating!

The children estimated then measured how many small paperclips it would take to go around the circumference of a shamrock.

A Spring Flower out of Gears

Sarah and Carleigh built a spring flower out of Gears.  If you turn one of the gears, it makes all of the gears of the flower turn.

Dental Hygiene Visit

Mrs. Oliveri, Cam and Archer's Mom, came to visit the first grade students to teach them about the importance of dental hygiene.  She brought to stuffed animals and a book about teeth to help show the children how to carefully brush, floss and take care of their teeth so that they don't get toothache or cavities.  Each of the children took a turn to brush the teeth of the animals.  Mrs. Oliveri also gave the children a goodie bag with a new toothbrush!  Thanks, Mrs. Oliveri for a great presentation!
