Valentines for Veterans!

The children made Valentines for Veterans to be delivered to the VA Hospital in Hampton by Mrs. Scullion.

NED Assembly

We were treated to a special NED assembly. NED stands for Never Give Up, Encourage others, and Do your best!  This is a one person performance using yoyo tricks to tell the story.  The children learned to treat others well and persevere even when something is difficult.

Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad

We read about Harriet Tubman and her bravery in rescuing hundreds of slaves using the Underground Railroad. The diagram below was used to help the children understand that the Underground Railroad was neither underground or a physical railroad.  The children learned that in this context "underground" means "secret" and it was called a "Railroad" because people would travel so far and stop, then travel to the next "station" and stop.  We discussed how people would hide slaves as they traveled to freedom as they traveled North.  Harriet Tubman made many journeys back to the south, risking her freedom, in order to help others.

Thank you notes to Cadence

We wrote thank you notes to Cadence.  We really appreciated her coming to first grade to teach us about Chinese New Year.

Ways to make 10

We used number cards to try and figure out multiple ways to make the number 10.  If you have 2+3+4, what other card do you need to make a total of 10?

Chinese New Year dance practice for our Asian Global Assembly!

Chinese New Year - special guest

We had a very special guest to help us celebrate Chinese New Year.  Cadence, a third grade student, came back to first grade with her mom to teach all of the first grade students about China and Chinese New Year.  They also brought rice with them and taught the children how to use chopsticks.

Happy Birthday, Kyah!

Kyah brought in a special birthday snack and we all sang Happy Birthday to her!

Measuring with paperclips, connecting cubes and square tiles

We measured using non-standard units - paperclips, connecting cubes and square tiles.  The children compared answers when measuring the same object.  This helps children understand the need for standardized tools of measurement.
