We watched a video on the Scholastic website that told about Christopher Columbus and his voyage from Spain to San Salvador. We looked at a map to find Spain and San Salvador. The children learned about life on a ship in the fifteenth century. The children enjoyed reading about the food on the ship and that they took chickens with them so that they could have fresh eggs. They also learned that the captain of the ship ate and slept in his own room while the rest of the sailors slept on mats or piles of rope on the floor. The children brainstormed ideas and then wrote independently about Christopher Columbus.
