Thank you Mrs. Shipp and Ms. Adamson!

Ms. Adamson brought the children spring shaped cookies to decorate, Mrs. Shipp brought frosting, sprinkles, jellybeans and m and m's and the children went to town decorating their cookies.  We wrote thank you notes to thank these parents for their kindness.

Helen Keller

These children just finished reading the chapter book Helen Keller.  They said they enjoyed everything about the story and it was hard to pick their favorite part of the book.  After reading the book, the children tried to read some words using the braille system.

Dear Mrs. Thompson

We thanked Mrs. Thompson for being a Mystery Reader.  She read a book about Jack and the Beanstalk, but this version was told from the point of view of the giant!

4th and 5th grade students reading to first grade

These students are performing in a forensics competition in two weeks.  They came to our classroom and talked about the types of reading or oratory they will be performing in front of judges.  Some of the children are performing poems, others are reading a passage of fiction and others are doing originial oratory.

The whole class using laptops!

The children are pictured typing a critique of the poem I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud by English poet William Wordsworth.  Before reading the poem, the children researched William Wordsworth on the internet.  They discovered that he had lived in a part of England called The Lake District about 250 years ago.  We read and discussed the poem so that the children understood its meaning. We delved into the vocabulary of the poem and discussed how the poet made his writing better because of the words he chose.  The children signed into Google Docs on a class set of Google Chromebooks and worked for almost an hour on their writing!

Japanese Children's Day

Our class contribution to the LS Newspaper will be an article on Japanese Children's Day as this ties in with our year long study of Asia.  Above you can see Jamison putting the finishing touches on a fish that all of the students took turns to paint.  Today, Marina, who is a fifth grade student who moved to Cape Henry Collegiate School from Japan in August, came to our classroom to tell us more about Children's Day.  She brought with her a carp windsock which would usually be hung from a tall pole outside the home in Japan.
