4th Grade taught us about Virginia


Our penpals in Taiwan wanted to know more about the State of Virginia.  We called in the Lower School experts - 4th Grade students.  In 4th grade, they study Virginia all year long.  We learned many things that we would like to share with our penpals.

  • Virginia was the 10th State to enter the union
  • The capital is Richmond
  • The population is 7,078,515 (12th most populous state)
  • Virginia Beach is the largest city
  • It is almost 40,000 square miles (37th largest state)
  • The state bird is a cardinal
  • The state fish is a Brook Trout
  • The state insect is a Tiger Swallowtail butterfly
  • The state flower is an American dogwood blossom
  • The state tree is an American dogwood
  • The state shell is an oyster shell
  • The state beverage is milk.
  • The state dance is the Square Dance
  • Virginia is known as the Old Dominion and it is a Commonwealth
